The global fashion industry produced around 2.1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2018, equaling 4% of the global total.
Around 70% of the fashion industry’s emissions came from activities such as materials production, preparation and processing.
The remaining 30% were associated with retail operations, the use-phase (laundry and maintenance) and end-of-use activities (recycling, landfill operations).
If no further action is taken over the next decade beyond measures already in place, the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions will likely rise to around 2.7 billion tons a year by 2030, reflecting an annual volume growth rate of 2.7%.
McKinsey estimates that to substantially reduce greenhouse emission 60% of potential lies in material production and processing.
20% of reduction needs to come from brand's own operations by reducing overproduction, minimizing returns and use of sustainable transport and making better choices with materials they use.
And the last 20% of reduction must come from us, consumers.
We can help by renting, reselling and repairing our clothes.
Reduce washing and drying.
Recycle more of our clothes to reduce incineration and landfill.
